Understanding the IFoS Examination Structure

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (The Screening)

The Prelims is common for both IAS and IFoS. However, because there are fewer vacancies in the Forest Service, the cutoff for IFoS is significantly higher (usually 10–15 marks more than the IAS cutoff).

Stage 2: Main Examination (The Specialist Stage)

Unlike the CSE, the IFoS Mains is entirely in English and focuses on scientific depth. It consists of six descriptive papers.

Part A: General Papers (Qualifying for Merit)

Paper I: General English (300 Marks): Essay writing, passage comprehension, and grammar.

Stage 3: Personality Test (The Interview)

Candidates who clear the Mains are called for an interview at Dholpur House, New Delhi.

Total Marks: 300.
Focus: It assesses your leadership, intellectual curiosity, and “outdoor” temperament. Expect questions on wildlife conservation, tribal rights, and climate change.

Final Merit Calculation

The final ranking is based on the aggregate score of the Mains (1400 marks) + Interview (300 marks), totaling 1700 marks.

Important Instructions for Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Candidates

1.Read the Official Notification Carefully
Candidates must thoroughly read the UPSC IFoS notification before applying. It contains essential information regarding eligibility, age limit, number of attempts, syllabus, exam pattern, and important dates. Ignorance of rules is not accepted as an excuse at any stage.

2. Check Eligibility Before Applying. Ensure that you meet the educational qualifications, age criteria, and nationality requirements prescribed by UPSC. Candidates found ineligible at any stage of the selection process will be disqualified, even if they have cleared earlier stages.

3. Fill the Application Form Accurately. All personal, educational, and communication details must be filled correctly in the online application form. Any discrepancy between the application details and original documents can lead to cancellation of candidature during verification.

4. Use Correct Photograph and Signature Format

Upload recent, clear, and properly sized photographs and signatures as per UPSC guidelines. Blurred images, wrong file size, or incorrect format may result in rejection of the application.

5. Download and Preserve Admit Card. Candidates must download their e-Admit Card from the UPSC website once released. The admit card should be printed clearly and preserved safely till the completion of the entire recruitment process.

6. Carry Valid Identity Proo. On the examination day, candidates must carry a valid original photo ID proof such as Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, PAN Card, Passport, or Driving License along with the admit card. Entry will not be allowed without valid identification.

7. Reach the Examination Centre on Time Candidates should report to the examination centre well before the reporting time mentioned on the admit card. Late entry is strictly prohibited under any circumstances.

8. Follow Examination Hall Discipline. Maintain strict discipline inside the examination hall. Talking, exchanging materials, or causing disturbance during the exam is prohibited and may lead to immediate disqualification.

9. Do Not Carry Prohibited Items. Electronic devices such as mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, Bluetooth devices, books, notes, and bags are strictly banned inside the examination hall.

10. Use Only Permitted Stationery. Candidates should use only black ball-point pens for marking answers, as instructed by UPSC. Use of any other pen or pencil may invalidate the OMR sheet.

11. Mark OMR Sheet Carefully. Fill in the details on the OMR answer sheet carefully, including roll number and test booklet series. Improper or incomplete marking can lead to rejection of the answer sheet.

12. Attempt Questions Judiciously Negative marking applies in the Preliminary Examination. Candidates are advised to attempt questions carefully to avoid unnecessary loss of marks.

13. Prepare Separately for IFoS Mains Candidates qualifying prelims must note that IFoS Mains is a separate, subject-oriented examination. Early preparation for optional subjects and practical papers is essential.

14. Keep Original Documents Ready Preserve all original certificates related to age, education, category, and disability (if applicable) for verification during later stages of the examination.
